The objective of the project was to design a strategy for the development of the rice sector in Mozambique. The TA undertook a review of the sector, and conducted field surveys of the rice value chains in 7 rice provinces to study the costs and margins of different types of farmers, wholesalers, millers, retailers, and importers. The rice value chain was analyzed along the dimensions of production, provision of inputs, marketing, milling, trading, imports, and provisions of services such as research, extension, and finance. The TA elaborated an overall strategy for development of the sector based on a long-term vision for the sector, a comprehensive set of activities, and a regional rice cluster focus. The project was implemented in collaboration with the GPSCA (Gabinete de Promoção do Sector Commercial Agrario)
Italian Agency of International Cooperation (Italcoop)
Agrifood Consulting International provided leadership and technical inputs to all the different aspects of the project.
